Frequently Asked Questions

How do I schedule a class or learn more?

For general questions about Sisu Firearms, you can submit questions using the form at the bottom of the Home Page. If you are ready to schedule a class, you can look to see what dates are available over the next 2-3 months on the calendar located on the Classes Page. Once you have a date in mind, fill out the form on the bottom of Classes Page. Of course, you can call, text or email Steve as well. (586)899-6687 or steve@sisufirearms.com

What requirements does the instructor need to teach at my house?

Pretty much any setting that will allow connecting a laptop to a display (TV or projector), and comfortable seating for your group size. It is best not to have minors in the house at the time since we will be using dry firearms as part of the class. There will be no live ammo during the portion at your home.

How old do you have to be to take the class?

You must be 21 years old to get a CPL with the State of Michigan, therefore, I only allow people 21 or older in the class. See the Michigan State Police CPL Requirements Page for a complete list of requirements.

What areas will Sisu Firearms travel to?

Steve lives in Clarkston, MI, and will drive: south to Troy, west to Highland Twp, north to Grand Blanc and east to Sterling Heights. Other locations may incur a small travel fee.

Is lunch provided?

No. The host can provide a lunch if desired. If the class is taught at Steve’s location, he will provide coffee, tea and water. The students are welcome to bring their own snacks or lunch if desred.

Does the fee include range time

Yes. The range time is included. Students should plan to bring their own pistol, ammo, ear and eye protection. If any of that is needed, reach out to Steve prior to class.

what range will we do live fire at?

We will use Accurate Range which is located on Dixie Highway in Clarkston. You should fill out the waiver prior to class that can be found at the bottom right of their website. Other ranges can be an option. Please inquire in the comments section when you fill out your Class Request Form.

Does everyone need their own pistol?

Two people can share the same pistol. I would assign you both to the same lane at the range. You should plan to bring 100 rounds of ammo per person.

can i take the class if i do not plan to get a cpl?

Yes, especially if you will have handguns in the home. I often have spouses in the class who do not intend to carry or even obtain a CPL. Since their significant other will have firearms, they want to learn safe handling and shooting.

How long is the class?

It is an 8 hour course, so plan to be there all day. If the class is held at your location, we may schedule a different day for the live fire at the Accurate Range. In most situations, if the class is held at Steve’s location or within 10 miles or so from Accurate, we will try to get the whole course completed in one day. If there is a desire to break that into 2 days, that is possible as well.

How much time do i have to submit my CPL application after receiving my training certificate?

Your training must be dated within 5 years of your CPL application. See the How to Apply for New Applicants section of the Oakland County Clerk website for an example (other county clerks express the same timing).

Do you offer refresher courses?

Yes. The refresher course is intended for those who are up for CPL renewal. For renewal, the CPL holder is required to complete a 3 hour review of the training material plus 1 hour of range time in the 6 months prior to the renewal application (see item 8 on MI State Police Renewal Information Page). Please inquire about pricing for the class using a Form on this site, or email me at steve@sisufirearms.com since it will depend on your group size and location for the review.
